Ideal For

The beef or hobby operation that wants to choose its own bale size rather than take what a fixed chamber gives it. A variable chamber lets you run a small, tight bale for feeders or open right up for straw and dry hay off the same machine.

Be realistic about the bale density note above — this is a machine for a buyer who is comfortable chasing belt tension and pressure settings, or who plans to bale at larger diameters where the consignor reports it performs better.

The CLAAS Advantage

CLAAS has been building round balers since 1976 and the Variant line, introduced in 1996, is the variable chamber half of that range. The ROTO CUT feed system — a cutting rotor running a bank of knives ahead of the chamber — is the feature that made these balers worth having, because chopped forage packs denser and pulls apart easier at the feeder.

The other thing CLAAS got right early was parts. These are common machines across North America and Europe, so belts, knives and pick-up tines for a Variant are ordinary shelf items rather than a hunt.
